AMCHAM AWARDS 2018 – AmCham Award-Winners and Their Achievements

On June 9, the American Chamber of Commerce in Kazakhstan held its 11th annual Awards Ceremony as part of the black-tie AmCham Awards Gala at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Astana.  Attended by 300 leaders of the international and Kazakhstani business community at corporate tables, as well as by ambassadors and senior diplomats headed by U.S. Ambassador George Krol, the evening was a celebration of achievements by AmCham members.  In addition to corporate achievements, contributions to the local community and to the culture and future of Kazakhstan were celebrated with awards.

The evening opened with two honorary awards: the U.S. Ambassador’s Award for Best Contribution to U.S.-Kazakhstan Relations presented by U.S. Ambassador George Krol to Akhmetzhan Yessimov, Chairman of the Samruk-Kazyna Fund, and the AmCham Public Service Award presented by AmCham Vice-President Bela Ferenczi, General Director of GE Central Asia and Azerbaijan, to the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

Eleven more awards, all adjudicated by an independent Selection Committee, were presented throughout the evening, beginning with the Executive of the Year Award, presented as a joint award to the leaders of Kazakhstan’s two prime oilfields: Bruno Jardin, Managing Director, North Caspian Operating Company (NCOC), operator of the Kashagan offshore oilfield, and Ted Etchison, General Director, Tengizchevroil (TCO), operator of the Tengiz onshore oilfield.

In announcing the joint award, AmCham President Kenneth Mack noted the tangible contribution both projects have made to Kazakhstan’s growth in recent years, underscoring the value of foreign investment to the economy.

Other Awards during the evening included Awards for Innovation, Innovative Training, Environment and Safety, and a number of awards for member social contributions to Women’s Advancement, Local Entrepreneurship, Health Protection, Community Service, and Support for Kazakhstan Culture.

In the area of Health Reform and Health Protection, two awards were presented: the AmCham Service Award presented to Baker McKenzie and Ernst & Young for their joint work with the Health and Justice Ministries to advance healthcare reform and pharmaceutical patent protection, and the Health Protection Award to the North Caspian Operating Company (NCOC) for its work to upgrade medical services in the Atyrau Oblast Hospital.
