Last Saturday, 18 corporate teams met at the Fifteenth Anniversary of the KPMG Almaty Chess Championships to compete for First place and the Championship Cup. For historical reasons the tournament in Almaty, with which the KPMG Chess Championships began fifteen years ago, was held only for companies representing the financial sector.
New companies from other sectors and neighboring countries (Kyrgyzstan) joined the Championships in Almaty year by year, and KPMG was more than willing to welcome them into its chess club. This meant that the Championship’s main objective, to promote this intellectual sport in Kazakhstan and Central Asia, gradually became a reality. The competitions were run in accordance with the FIDE regulations and the Swiss system in seven rounds using Swiss Master, a computer-based drawing procedure. A team of referees headed by Nurlan Ibraev, the main referee, FIDE arbiter, and international grandmaster, ensured observance of the regulations.
The anniversary Championships produced both Team and Individual winners. The AO ATF Bank team took First Place in the team event, with DB AO Home Credit Bank in Second Place, and the AO Alel Agro team in Third Place. The Individual winners were Bakhtiyat Askarov (ATF Bank) on the first board, Sardarbek Nurdin (Sky Mobile) on the second board, and Nurlan Nurakhov (ATF Bank) in First Place on the third board. Mementos were given to all tournament participants. The winners in the Team and Individual events received diplomas and prizes.
The Sixth KPMG Championship in Astana was held on 30 June and closed this year's KPMG chess season.
