KPMG in Kazakhstan and Central Asia continues the chess tournament season 2016

Every year KPMG in Kazakhstan and Central Asia organises chess tournaments in Almaty, Astana and Bishkek which bring together fans of this ancient and wise game.

This year, the tournament season was opened on 13 February in Bishkek, where the 2nd Premiere League Chess Tournament for Kyrgyz business community gathered a record number of participants: 20 teams.

On 4 June, Almaty hosted the 13th Almaty Premiere League Chess Tournament. “This tournament originated 13 years ago as a competition for financial sector teams, so today almost all participating teams from local banks are already experienced contestants. We are glad to see other sectors’ teams joining the games too – it means that we have been achieving our main objective: to promote this intellectual sports in Kazakhstan and Central Asia,” commented Karlygash Kaltayeva, Head of Markets at KPMG in Kazakhstan and Central Asia.

This year, 16 teams of three players and one reserve player each competed for the Cup. The tournament was held in accordance with the Swiss system: nine rounds, with a 15-minute time limit for each player per game. The referee team was led by Oleg Dzyuban, international master and Honoured Coach of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

At the end of the tournament, the winners were determined for both team and individual events. The winner in the team event was, and not for the first time too, the JCS Air Astana team, the runner-up was the JCS Bank CentrCredit team, and the bronze went to JCS National Bank of Kazakhstan. In the individual event, the winner was Akzhan Eszhanov (JCS Nurbank), the silver went to Andrey Kim (JCS Sberbank), and two players competed for the bronze – Erzhan Erbolat (JCS AirAstana) and Azamat Kussanov (Eurasian Development Bank) – with Azamat eventually winning over.

All the participants received souvenirs, and the winners received awards and certificates.

The chess tournament season this year will feature one more event: the 4th Premiere League Chess Tournament in Astana, which will take place on 18 June.
