AmCham Decarbonization Committee Explores New IFRS Sustainability Standards at IFC Almaty

Yesterday, AmCham’s Decarbonization Committee met at IFC Almaty for a knowledge-sharing session led by IFC representatives Adalyat Abdumanapova and Taras Seryy, who provided an overview of the new IFRS S1–S2 sustainability disclosure standards and what they mean for companies operating in Kazakhstan.

The discussion touched on several practical issues, including:
🌍  the shift from fragmented ESG frameworks to a single global baseline under IFRS;
📑  how financial materiality will shape sustainability reporting;
🏛️  the importance of integrating governance, strategy, and risk management into disclosure;
🧮  and the challenges companies face in calculating Scope 3 emissions and aligning CO₂ methodologies.

A look at last week’s PM2.5 levels in Almaty served as a reminder of why these conversations matter far beyond compliance.

Thank you to IFC for hosting and to all members who joined onsite and online. We look forward to continuing our peer discussion and dialogue.
