Brief Project Description: The Scholarship Programme has created long-term social impact by providing access to world-class education for gifted students from across Kazakhstan. Since 2011, 111 students have received scholarships, many of whom are now studying at leading universities worldwide, including Stanford, MIT, Harvard, Cambridge, and Yale. The outcome is sustainable: talented students from low-income backgrounds are empowered to pursue higher education, professional careers, and leadership roles. The programme has also broadened access through nationwide Olympiads, giving over 1,000 schoolchildren each year opportunities to showcase their talent. This lasting model ensures equal educational opportunities and promotes social mobility in Kazakhstan.
Problem Statement: The Scholarship Programme is more than financial aid: it is a comprehensive educational and cultural initiative. Its strength lies in the combination of rigorous selection, academic support, Olympiad outreach, and professional mentoring. The programme not only supports individual students but also inspires thousands of children across Kazakhstan who participate in Olympiads and aspire to join.
Objectives: The Scholarship Programme has created long-term social impact by providing access to world-class education for gifted students from across Kazakhstan.
Key Results: • Since 2011, 111 students have received scholarships, many of whom are now studying at leading universities worldwide, including Stanford, MIT, Harvard, Cambridge, and Yale. • The programme has also broadened access through nationwide Olympiads, giving over 1,000 schoolchildren each year opportunities to showcase their talent. • 111 students have been awarded scholarships since 2011. • $9.1 million in university scholarships secured by graduates between 2020-2024, including $4.75 million in 2024 alone.
Key Activities: The main driver of the programme’s success is the structured process of identifying, supporting, and mentoring talented students. Key outputs and actions include: - Selection Process: Rigorous testing and interviews to identify high-potential students, ensuring fairness and transparency. - Scholarships: Full and partial financial support covering tuition, enabling access to British-style education for students who could not otherwise afford it. - Academic Competitions: Annual STEM, Mathematics, and English Olympiads reaching more than 1,000 students nationwide, expanding outreach and creating a pipeline of talented applicants. - University Counselling: Since 2018, professional counsellors have guided students through applications to leading global universities, significantly improving acceptance and scholarship success rates. - Kazakh Language Grants: Introduced in 2023 to encourage cultural and linguistic achievement alongside academic excellence. - Alumni Engagement: Graduates act as role models, sharing their stories and inspiring younger students. These outputs have built a sustainable system where financial aid is combined with academic mentoring, competitions, and counselling, resulting in a strong track record of university admissions and scholarships abroad.
Key Learnings and Recommendations: Looking forward, the programme aims to expand partnerships with the Daryn Centre and global Olympiad networks, and to create student housing in Almaty to support rural scholars. These steps will ensure even broader access and sustainability.
